Getting a Good Print From a Digital File

  • Resolution: Print quality depends on how many pixels are available across the printed dimension. The standard benchmark is 300 pixels per inch, though large prints viewed from a distance hold up well at less. What matters is the original file rather than the file size shown on your phone, which reflects compression as much as detail.
  • Compression: Images sent through text messages and some messaging apps are compressed heavily, often to a fraction of their original data. That compression is not reversible, and it's the single most common reason a photo that looks fine on a screen disappoints at larger sizes. Sharing the original file, rather than forwarding a version that has already been sent once, avoids this entirely.
  • Aspect Ratio: Phone cameras and standard print sizes don't share proportions. A typical phone photo is a 4:3 rectangle, while common print sizes like 8x10 are proportioned differently, which means something has to be cropped. Deciding what to lose is a design choice, and it's easier to make deliberately from a full frame than to discover after the fact.
  • Screens Lie a Little: Phone and laptop screens are backlit and typically show images brighter and more saturated than paper can reproduce. A print will normally read slightly darker and less vivid than the same image on a screen. That's a property of the media rather than a fault in the print.

Please Don't Crop Before Sending

The most common issue we run into is a photo that's already been cropped, or a print size chosen that won't work with the original image dimensions. Send us the original, uncropped file whenever possible. We'll crop it ourselves and suggest the size that suits the image best. Cropping ahead of time removes options that can't be recovered later.

Printing for Memorial Services

We regularly handle printing for wakes and funeral services: portraits in a range of sizes, matching frames, and photo collages honoring a life. These jobs usually come with a short timeline and we understand the circumstances. Tell us the date and we'll work to it.

Larger Than 17" x 22"?

Our printing tops out at 17" x 22". For large format photo printing beyond that, we can recommend a trusted fine art printer, and we're still happy to frame the finished piece for you.

Common Questions About Photo Printing

How long does a print order take?

A standard print order typically takes a few days.

What's the largest size you can print?

17" x 22". Beyond that we'll refer you to a fine art printer we trust.

Will a phone photo look good printed large?

Usually, yes. Phone photos typically print very well up to 17" x 22". Send the original file rather than one forwarded through a text thread, since those are heavily compressed.

Can you print from an old photo I don't have digitally?

Yes. We scan the print first, then reproduce it at whatever size you need. That's also the first step in photo restoration.

Can you print and frame together?

Yes, and most customers do. Printing takes a few days and framing adds to that, so let us know if there's a deadline.
