How Canvas Stretching Works
A stretched canvas is fabric pulled taut over a wooden framework called stretcher bars. The bars are joined at the corners, and traditional stretcher bars accept small wooden wedges, called keys, that can be tapped into the corner slots to increase tension slightly over time.
Canvas loosens naturally. Cotton and linen are hygroscopic, meaning they absorb and release moisture as humidity changes through the seasons. Over years of that cycling, a canvas that was drum-tight when stretched will soften. This is normal rather than a defect, and it's why re-stretching is a routine service rather than a repair.
Margin
Stretching requires unpainted canvas around the edges of the image, which wraps around the bars and is secured on the reverse. How much is needed depends on the depth of the bars used. This is the single most common constraint on a stretching project, and it's why it helps to know what margin your piece has before deciding on a presentation.
Gallery Wrap Depth
Gallery wrap bars come in different depths. Shallower profiles sit close to the wall and read as understated. Deeper profiles project further and give the piece more physical presence, which suits large or contemporary work. Depth is a design decision as much as a structural one.
Storing a Rolled Canvas
If you're holding a rolled canvas before bringing it in, store it rolled with the painted surface facing outward rather than inward, and keep it in a stable, dry environment. Rolling paint inward compresses the paint layer against itself, which can cause cracking.
Gallery Wrap or Framed?
A gallery wrap carries the image around the sides of the stretcher bars for a clean, contemporary look with no frame at all. A traditional stretch and frame gives the piece a finished edge and additional physical protection at the corners, where damage usually happens.
