What Makes a Collage Work
- Edit Before You Arrange: The most common issue with collage design is including too much. Every item added competes for attention with the others, and past a certain density the piece stops reading as a story and starts reading as a wall of objects. A smaller number of well-chosen pieces almost always has more impact.
- Give It a Focal Point: Effective collages usually have one dominant element, often a single larger photograph, with supporting items arranged around it. Without that anchor, the eye has nowhere to land and moves across the piece without settling.
- Scale Is a Design Tool: Photographs don't have to stay the size they arrived. Reprinting an image larger or smaller changes its weight within the composition entirely, and it's often the difference between a layout that works and one that doesn't quite.
- Think About the Wall First: Collages grow as items are added during design. Knowing the dimensions of the space you're working with keeps the finished piece proportionate to where it's going, and it's much easier to work within a known constraint than to discover one at the end.

Scanning for a Better Design
We often scan an original photo before including it in a collage. That lets us reprint it at a different size, which gives us far more options for the finished layout — a small snapshot can become the anchor image, or a large portrait can be scaled down to sit alongside other pieces. Our in-house professional printing makes this straightforward, and we can restore damaged photos at the same time if needed.

How many photos can fit in one frame?
It depends on the finished size and how large you want each image. We'll show you options at different counts so you can see the tradeoff between quantity and visual impact.
Is there a design fee?
No. There's never any fee for the consultation or design process.
Can you use my original photographs?
We can, though for irreplaceable images we'll often scan and reprint instead, so your original stays safe.
What should I bring?
Everything. Bring the whole box, including items you're unsure about. Editing down is part of what we do together.
