A customer came to us distraught. Her cleaning person had accidentally knocked a cherished family photo off the wall, and as it fell it knocked over a glass of water, soaking the picture. It was one of the only photos she had of her entire family.

When we examined it, we discovered it had originally been printed on regular copy paper, which is why the ink had bled so badly, and the image itself wasn't very sharp even in areas that hadn't gotten wet. We scanned the damaged photo, restored and sharpened the image, printed it on professional-grade photo paper, and custom framed it. The finished piece nearly brought her to tears.

What Can and Can't Be Recovered

Photo restoration works from whatever information survives in the original. Where detail still exists, even faintly, it can usually be brought back. Where the image has been physically lost, the missing area has to be reconstructed based on what surrounds it.

• Usually Straightforward: Overall fading, color shifts, low contrast, surface dust and scratches, creases, and tears through background areas are all routine. So is silver mirroring, the metallic sheen that appears on old black and white prints as silver migrates to the surface.
• More Involved: Missing sections through a face, heavy water damage that has bled ink across the image, mold that has eaten into the emulsion, and severe fading where almost no tonal information remains all require reconstruction rather than correction. Results in these cases depend heavily on what reference exists elsewhere in the photograph.

How the Process Works

We scan your original at high resolution, restore the digital file, then print the repaired image at whatever size you need using our in-house professional printing. We can also remove distracting elements from the background if you'd like.

Why the Scan Matters

Every restoration begins with a scan, and the quality of that scan sets the ceiling on the finished result. Scanning at high resolution captures detail that isn't visible to the eye in the print, which is often what makes recovery possible. It also means the file can be printed larger than the original without softening.

If a Photo Is Stuck, Leave It Alone

We can often restore old photos that are stuck to glass or an album page. Please don't try to pull them free yourself — that's when the real damage happens, and it's frequently unrecoverable. Bring the photo in exactly as it is, glass and all.

Most customers pair restoration with printing and custom framing, so the finished piece is ready to hang when they collect it. Restored photographs also work beautifully in a collage or memorabilia piece alongside other family images.

Caring for the Photographs You Still Have

Heat and humidity accelerate deterioration more than anything else, so an interior closet is a far better storage location than an attic, a basement or a garage. Keep prints out of direct light, store them flat rather than curled, and avoid magnetic or self-adhesive photo albums, which were common for decades and whose adhesive is a frequent cause of the damage we're asked to repair.
