Understanding Your Framing Options
Custom framing involves a handful of decisions, and knowing the vocabulary makes the conversation easier.
Glazing
Glazing is the clear layer covering the artwork. Standard glass is the least expensive option and offers no meaningful protection from light. UV-filtering glazing blocks the majority of ultraviolet light, which is the primary driver of fading. Anti-reflective and museum-grade glazing add optical coatings that reduce glare, useful in rooms with strong lighting or windows opposite the wall. Acrylic is lighter and shatter-resistant, which matters for oversized pieces or homes with children.
Matting
A mat is the bordered surface between the artwork and the frame. It serves two purposes. Visually, it gives the eye space and separates the artwork from the moulding. Physically, it holds the glazing off the surface of the artwork, which prevents the piece from adhering to the glass over time as humidity cycles through the frame. Where a design calls for no mat, spacers perform the same protective function invisibly.
Moulding
Moulding is the frame itself. Profile refers to its shape in cross-section, and width and depth determine how much visual weight it carries. A heavy ornate moulding can overwhelm a delicate work on paper, while a narrow profile can look insubstantial around a large canvas. This is the decision most people find hardest in the abstract and easiest once samples are held against the actual piece.

What to Expect When You Visit
Bring your piece in and we'll look at it together on the counter. We pull moulding corners and mat samples, hold them against the artwork in the light, and narrow the options down with you. Most consultations take 20 to 30 minutes, and there is no charge and no obligation to order.
We are a walk-in shop and always have been. We've also added online appointment booking for anyone who would rather have a set time. Either way works.

How much does custom framing cost?
Price depends on size, moulding, mat choice and glazing, so there's no single answer. We quote every project at the time of consultation, before any work begins, and there's never a fee for the consultation or the design process itself.
How long does custom framing take?
Most orders are ready in 1 to 3 weeks depending on materials and workload. Some specialty work takes longer — textile pieces run 4 to 6 weeks, and jersey and service shadow boxes typically take 3 to 4. If you have a deadline, tell us at drop-off and we'll confirm whether it's realistic.
Do I need an appointment?
No. We're a walk-in shop. Appointments are simply there if you prefer a scheduled time.
Do I need to know what I want before I come in?
Not at all. Most people arrive with a piece and no plan, and that's the normal starting point. Bring what you have and we'll work through the options together.
